Chapter Eighteen

Clothes ripped, and I spun around to find Draco shifting into his dragon form. Navy scales covered his skin as his body grew.

I’d never seen a dragon shift before, but I forced my attention back to the guards and noticed that their guns were tilted in various ways as if they weren’t aiming.

Draco must have distracted them as well. Kill, we have to move, I linked.

Skin tingling, I knew Killian was looking at me, so I nodded upward. His terror slammed into me and mixed with my own.

“You heard Bune. Go,” Killian murmured loudly enough for all the supernaturals to hear without alarming the humans. “They’re going to shoot us from the windows.”

Draco flapped his wings, lifting from the ground as the demons soared to help him. Though the humans couldn’t see the demons, they would unfortunately see Draco.

Bune flickered back into human form. Roxy gasped next to Sierra and stumbled backward.

I clenched my hands and bit my tongue, resisting scolding her about being afraid of a demon on our side when humans had guns trained on us.

Egan bent down to lift Eleanor, but Zagan shook his head. The demon scooped her up and cradled her in his arms, then he stepped through the jagged opening she and Egan had made. That was enough to get the rest of us moving.

“They’re going inside,” a male guard gritted out.

“Move, now!” I commanded and waved my hand. Though I didn’t want to get injured, I couldn’t run into the garage until our pack and allies had made it in. This was one of the scariest parts about being a leader, which I’d realized while watching my dad sacrifice his needs and safety for the rest of us.

At this moment, the decision felt right.

Glancing over my shoulder, I watched as the other group hurried through the hole Sadie had made. Just like Killian and me, Sadie and Donovan stood and watched as their people ran inside.

A loud roar vibrated the ground as Draco huffed fire from his nose and mouth. The ten demons slipped into the windows just as the guard who’d alerted the others fired at the dragon.

Between the roar and gunshots, my ears rang as I stood helplessly below, unable to assist. I watched, eyes widening, as the bullet barreling toward Draco slowed until it hovered in the air.

I blinked twice, thinking this had to be a figment of my imagination, but then the bullet slowly descended to the ground.

That shouldn’t have been possible, yet I’d witnessed it with my own two eyes. I glanced up and noted a large sweat mark on Sadie’s pale pink shirt. She’d obviously exerted more energy.

The world tilted as I tried to process what I’d seen.

Screams of terror rang out through the windows, confirming the demons had begun their assault. With the demons and Draco, we should be able to make it inside. Now I was worried about what we might find.

Roxy, Axel, Sierra, and Torak were the last four Killian and I were waiting on.
